The 1st edition of this elegant architectural study of Fountains' Abbey, circa 1812 (dated as such in pencil in an early hand at the foot of the title page). Engraved frontispiece plus 15 engraved plates (the final plate a fold-out) and 2 vignettes. Bound in a 1/4 morocco (with bright gilt-titling) over marbled boards. Light, modest rubbing at the spine and along the panels. Internally, very sharp, with just a touch of very mild foxing but no other markings to speak of. The original tipped-in errata slip (at the first page of text) in place. Quarto, 160 pgs., including Appendix and Index. The Fountains' Abbey, a Cistercian monastery dating back to 1132, was in operation for over 400 years, "until its dissolution, by order of Henry VIII, in 1539
