New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1923. Hardcover. Good. Hardcover. Emerson Hough was a prolific American writer of westerns and historical novels. He was also an ardent conservationist who conducted a survey of bison in the area of Yellowstone National Park, advocated for the creation of a national park system, and was a cofounder of the Izaak Walton League. He published over 30 titles, beginning in 1895. The Covered Wagon was copyrighted in 1922, the year before he died. It was one of his best selling novels and was made into a film in 1923, just before his death. The book is a story of a group of settlers from many different states setting off from Missouri in a covered wagon caravan to the Oregon territory. Many of Hough's works were made into films from the era of the silent film into the late 1930s, making him one of the first modern authors to have a major place in the motion picture industry.
