"If, by accident, this work should find favor among his countrymen, some apology for the many faults, which, though hidden from the author, will be obvious enough to nicer eyes" (from the Preface, p. vii).
The unnamed author was Alexander Slidell Mackenzie (1803-1848), who served as Captain of the ship the USS Somers. Though his name was eventually cleared, Mackenzie came under severe public criticism ten years after this work was published for his shipboard execution of three men suspected of mutiny.
