Venice: Gabriel Ioito di Ferrari, 1542. Quarto in eights (21cm). Later brown sheep, double gilt fillets to outer perimeter of boards, titled in gilt on spine within ruled panel. [24]pp, then foliated I-CCLX. Decorative title page with relief portrait of the author, 10 in-text woodcuts, and numerous decorative initials. "Venize 1542" in manuscript on front board. Bookplate of Dr. Philipp Bussigel. Ownership inscription to flyleaf: "Miremont Berthenay." Sound but with wear to edges, losses to leather over spine ends, dampstaining to first blanks and slightly to title page; minor tears to four leaves (K4, L2, R6, and G3), three with repairs or infills; dampstaining, especially to endleaves; mild musty odor, but complete and Good.

Illustrated edition of the Decameron, edited by humanist scolar Antonio Brucioli (1498-1566), who was also known for his Italian translations of Aristotle's Politics and of the Bible. The latter was banned by Pope Paul IV, and Brucioli was convicted of heresy. This copy with French aristocratic provenance: Madeleine Moët de Louverny, Vicomtesse de Berthenay, (1732-1797) married Alphonse de Miremont (1715-1790). USTC 814815. [63004].
