Dennis was the first professional literary critic, and best remembered as the leading critic of his generation, and as a pioneer of the concept of the sublime as an aesthetic quality in that regard. In 1711 he began disputes with Pope and Addison. Samuel Johnson noted Pope as the dispute instigator. DNB p.528.
