Contemporary red leather tooled in blinds. Rebacked with new endpapers and conservation repairs to lower corners of a few leaves. Some remaining paper flaws at bottom corners. A nice clean copy of an important book. First edition in Turkish. One of 50 copies printed. 259 pp. Pages 213-216 mispaginated 209-212. 1 vols. Tall 8vo. Egyptian polymath Rifa‘at Rafi‘ Tahtawi (1801-73) travelled to Paris at the behest of Muhammad ‘Ali, to act as leader and imam to a group of students sent there on scholarships. He lived in during the years 1826 to 1831 and paid close attention to the French educational system and culture. Upon his return to Cairo, Tahtawi organized a language school on the Europen model under the patronage of the Khedive (the origins of Ain Shams University). Tahtawi, who would issue a stream of translations and progressive works during his long career, also drafted an acount of his travels, The Quintessence of Paris, written in Arabic and first published by the Bulaq press in 1834. This Turkish edition, entitled Seyahatname-i Rifa‘a (The Travel Book of Rifa‘a), was translated by Rustam Besim for Muhammad ‘Ali and for circulation among government and intellectual elite.
The Khedive had ordered the establishment of a printing house and took great interest in the Bulaq Press and its output. The first book was a work of military strategy, printed in 1822. New typefaces were lettered and cast to replace the imported types and within a decade of its establishment the quality of “printing at Bulaq surpassed the printing standards of Istabul” (Ihsanoglu). Print runs of 100 copies for the Arabic and 50 copies for the Turkish editions are reported. OCLC records a handful of locations under several records (Princeton, SOAS, BL, Oxford, McGill, LC, Kentucky). Bulaq printings are sometimes seen in heavily toned condition. This copy has some old traces of damp to the lower corner but is otherwise clean and well printed on better paper than.
