The archeologist and historian James Henry Breasted was the first American to obtain a doctorate in Egyptology. Breasted led expeditions to Egypt and the Sudan and copied inscriptions from monuments that had been previously unreachable or were perishing. He was also responsible for organizing the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago in 1919.
