Hayward Patterson's account of being falsely accused of raping two white women aboard a train near Scottsboro, Alabama, in 1931. The trials sparked an international uproar and the defendents were forced to endure the harsh conditions of the Alabama prison system for years. The trials and the Supreme Court verdicts which followed helped fuel the rise of the Civil Rights Movement.
