By [Stephen Greene] Sigrid de Lima
New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, 1968. Very Good +/Very Good. New York: Harcourt, Brace & World, 1968. First Edition, stated. Octavo (20.5cm.); publisher's cloth, grey topstain, in white pictorial price-clipped dust jacket; [4],182pp. Moderate wear to jacket margins including tiny closed tear at top margin of upper panel, dampstaining along spine panel slightly bleeding to upper panel though only very faintly affecting cloth, paper / adhesive residue from removed label to second half title else interior clean and unmarked; overall Very Good.

An "extra-illustrated" copy of the author's final published novel, enhanced with an original pencil and acrylic painting (20x13cm.) by the author's husband the artist Stephen Greene (1917-1999). A lovely and muted work of abstract art in whites and grey with one tiny triangle of electric orange in the middle. The piece is signed both "Sigrid de Lima" and "Greene" in pencil at upper and lower margins, with added inscription "for Philip Bruno" in upper left-hand corner.

Sadly for De Lima (1921-1999), her fifth novel Oriane marked the end of her writing career--the reviews were so few and so unenthusiastic that she gave up writing for the rest of her life, though she lived another thirty long years.
