Fairy Tales

  • London: George G. Harrap & Company, 1916
By Hans Christian Andersen; Harry Clarke [illus.]
London: George G. Harrap & Company, 1916. Very Good. London: George G. Harrap & Company, 1916. First Thus. Quarto. 318 pp. 40 plates, 16 of which are full color with lettered tissue guards, complete. Grey cloth binding stamped in black with oval pictorial pastedown to front. Top edge gilt. No dust jacket.

Boards chipped with minor loss at spine ends; corners bumped; general soiling and spine toned. A touch of separation along spine, but overall binding is sound. Ownership bookplate of Captain William A. Heizmann - Air Service U.S. Army to front pastedown, with gift inscription "To Bert from Daddy France 1918" in William's hand. Foxing and spotting to pages but overall text legible and images clear.

Overall a very good copy, enriched with a touching gift inscription, of Clarke's first printed work, followed up with his work for Edgar Allen Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination in 1919.
