One of Welty's first short stories written around 1935 (although not seen in print until its 1977 publication in Delta magazine), which gives readers insight into the writer's creative and professional development. Welt herself admits in her introduction that she actually knew very little about the subject of acrobats, but was driven to capture the spell of traveling performers, and in retrospect sees the family story as a central theme carried throughout her career. Fine.
