Three (3) Intricate Cutwork Silhouette Scenes -- Country and Nature Themes
- 19th century
19th century. Very good. A little dust soiling to embossed papers.. Three (3) intricate and fine example of handcut cutwork silhouette scenes, each carefully cut from a single piece of coated black paper and loosely housed with contemporary embossed paper bifolia. Each depict bucolic country scenes, and work well as a series. The scenes include: a small cottage with tree, and woman hauling gallons of water over her shoulders; two women by a tree stump, with a man kneeling over a camp fire; and a woman smoking a pipe under a large tree, as her shepherd husband and sheepdog are herding a flock of sheep. The largest measures approx. 3" by 5.25", and the smallest measures approx. 2.25" by 3.5". The embossed paper bifolia each measures approx. 7.25" by 7.25" The artist's skill is evident in the tiny details, such as a small bird perched on a branch or a small pipe smoked by one of the figures.
