Atheniensia, or Remarks on the Typography and Buildings of Athens
- SIGNED Full calf
- London: John Murray, 1816
London: John Murray, 1816. Full calf. Very Good +. A wonderful Association copy: INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, WILLIAM WILKINS, TO THE EARL OF OXFORD on a blank preliminary. A solid, tight copy to boot of the 1816 1st edition. Bright and VG+ in the publisher's original --or certainly contemporary-to-the-period-- full, light-brown calf, with a custom, re-backed spine (with 5 raised bands, dark leather title-label, decorative blindstamping within the compartments, gilt date-of-publication {1816} at the foot of the spine). Octavo, fold-out frontispiece map ("The Plan of Athens"), additional double-page illustration ("View of the Erectheum") facing pg. 193. A bit of mild spotting to the front pastedown and facing endsheet, a touch of mild staining at the foot of the blank preliminary where the inscription appears. Impressive and uncommon as such.
