Waterloo IA: Elmer Valo Appreciation Society. Near Fine. 1978. (Number 4). Magazine. [some light wear along the spine only]. (B&W photographs, graphics, facsimiles) Most of this 135-page issue is devoted to a lengthy featured entitled "Hammer: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" -- but then again, the Hammer horror films were the sole subjects of ALL issues of this periodical, which began publication in 1972 and was issued "on a most irregular basis" for decades thereafter. A half-dozen or so writers contributed to this particular issue, which also incorporates numerous sidebars (like mini-interviews) with many individuals associated with the company and its films, among them: director Michael Carreras; his father Sir James Carreras; producers Anthony Hinds and Anthony Nelson-Keys; directors Terence Fisher, Val Guest, Roy Ward Baker, and John Gilling; and a number of technicians, including Roy Ashton (makeup), Don Mingaye (art director), Bernard Robinson (set designer), and Les Bowie (special effects); writer Jimmy Sangster; actors Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Dave Prowse, Martine Beswick, Ingrid Pitt, and others. There's a Hammer filmography, loads of stills and poster/ad reproductions (all in black & white, alas), and more. Oh, and speaking of Dave (David) Prowse, the issue also contains a separate interview with him -- because of course he had just hit the big time by portraying Darth Vader in STAR WARS. Laid in to this issue is a promotional flyer for the issue, which also serves as an order form for the (then) three back issues. (A mighty impressive publication to be based in Waterloo, Iowa, of all places, it seems to have been publishing at least into the early 2020s, with issue #48 being the latest I've found evidence of.) .
