Rutherford at the Violin and German Flute in St. Martins Court near Leicester Fields, where may be had all the favourite Country Dances and Minuets which are now in Vogue, 1780. Octavo. Attractively bound in 20th century dark brown mottled calf with double-rule gilt to edges, raised bands on spine in compartments gilt, black leather titles gilt, all edges gilt. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), [ii] (index), [i] (blank), 57, [i] (blank) pp.

Provenance:
Noted violinmaker and collector Arthur F. Hill, with his decoratively engraved bookplate to front pastedown incorporating floral motifs, a violin, and the motto "Alive I was a silent thing But dead divinest themes I sing" and with Hill's annotation in ink to front free endpaper "David Rutherford carried on his music business at 'The Violin and German Flute' as early as 1745. He was succeeded by his son, John, and most of their publications consisted of Country Dances. A.F.H." Several leaves with manuscript pagination in a contemporary hand.

These minuets, many of which bear the names of Ladies, Lords, aristocrats, dignitaries, and other individuals, bear vivid musical traces of their original social settings.
