New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1957). First Edition. Hardcover. [very nice copy, slight age-toning to top page edges; jacket shows just a trace of wear at a few corners]. DESCRIPTION TO BE WRITTEN. Novel set in San Francisco, that (per the jacket blurb) captures "the look and feel, the sea-washed light and drifting fog" of the city. The story concerns a new-in-town newspaperman who falls in love with "the girl he knew he'd find in the city of his dreams. The lovers, absorbed in their own intense drama, move through a bohemia of characters, funny or wild or touching, and completely authentic." The author was a third-generation San Franciscan, so presumably knew the territory; had written an earlier novel also set in the city, "Glorious in Another Day" (1947). Baird & Greenwood 836. .
