New Guinea, 1945. Unbound. Near Fine. Mimeographed newspaper. 4pp. Very good with creasing, toning, and tiny tears.

The first issue of the *The Hornet Herald*, a mimeographed camp newspaper published by the 221st CA BN APO 322 in New Guinea during World War II. This issue is dated Wednesday February 14, 1945 with the headline “Birth of the Herald” and begins with a letter from the editor which reads, in part, “this is the first edition of our new Battalion newspaper, “The Hornet Herald.” The paper will be published twice weekly…and will include articles of interest to the G.I., battery news, sports results, and cartoons.” Due to a paper shortage the letter also requests a sharing system so everyone can read the paper. Other articles feature headlines such as “Phony Radio Broadcasts,” “GIs Show Mettle in Rough Going,” and “Crimean Conference.”.
