[New York, New York]: [Berlin & Jones], 1870. Very good to near-fine. One or two spots, a little crease and small point of tarnishing to gold scrap.. A striking "paper with a secret"-type Valentine, made from pictorial lace paper, embossed and die cut Victorian scrap, and a chromolithographed scrap with poem. The lace paper features an intricate border of birds and flora. To see the hidden message inside, the recipient must lift up the large gold scrap. The printed text inside reads, "Oh! ay not woman's love is true Who never felt its flame, Tis the man she glories to subdue, And love is but a name." It is addressed in pencil to Miss Minnie Lir(?). Measures approx. 5.25" by 3.5". Modern blind embossed ownership stamp of Marcia Finley Smith to lower leaf.
