By Chase, Borden
Philadelphia: The Penn Publishing Company. Very Good+. (c.1938). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, light shelfwear, very slight bumping to a couple of corners; the title page and both endpapers are rubber-stamped "Property of Vanguard Films, Inc." and the front endpaper also bears the small printed label of Myron Selznick & Company (see notes)]. The second book that the author managed to squeeze out of his experience on an East River tunnel gang. (The first, "East River," was published in 1935.) This book is often cited erroneously, by the chronologically-challenged, as the source for the 1935 Raoul Walsh film UNDER PRESSURE, which was actually based on "East River," which at one time (prior to its publication) was actually called "Sand Hog." Confused? Maybe you need both books, to help you sort it out. (Yes, we also have a copy of "East River" on offer.) NOTE that the stamping (Vanguard Films, Inc.) and the label (Myron Selznick & Company) in this book constitute an intereresting brotherly association: Vanguard was producer David O. Selznick's production company between 1943 and 1951, and David's brother Myron was one of Hollywood's leading agents. .
