Two (2) Scarce 1907 Orissa Mission Press Publications Printed in Cuttack, India
- Cuttack, Odisha, India: Orissa Mission Press, 1907
Cuttack, Odisha, India: Orissa Mission Press, 1907. Very good. Toned, water staining.. Two (2) copies of a scarce ephemeral missionary publication by the Orissa Mission Press, one in blue wrappers, the other in pink. They are printed in Odia, the official language of the Indian state of Odisha (formerly "Orissa"). The Orissa Mission Press was established in 1838 when British missionary Charles Lacey brought a printing press to Cuttack, and began printing textbooks in vernacular languages for the local population. It soon began printing tracts, gospels, and scriptures as a part of its religious mission. It would become seminal in the Oriya Language Movement. This publication's aim was to educate Odisha locals in Christianity, and appears to combine local history and lore with Christian ideology and Bible stories. It is illustrated, including a large image of a snake charmer on the lower wrapper. Upper wrapper has image of palm trees. Single vol. (6.75" by 4.75"), pp. [16], illus., in original illus. wrappers (blue or pink). No copies located in WorldCat as of June 2024.
