By
The Netherlands, 1820. Very good. Toned with some dust soiling. Tab worn. Sewing appears original or near-contemporary and remains firm.. A skillfully designed pocket volvelle calculating device for commerce, allowing buyers and sellers to determine the exact amount of cents are in a given amount of the old Dutch currency Stuyvers (also "stuivers") and Duyten (also "duits"). Decimalization was introduced to the Netherlands in 1818, rendering devices like this volvelle necessary for merchants, tradesmen, and other buyers. The full text reads, "Cents of Muntwijzer Zoo als daar in Betaald Wordt tot gemak van Winkelier en Kooper uigevonde" (roughly translating to "Cents of Coin Indicator As Paid For The Convenience of Retailer and Buyer"). Engraved card measures approx. 3.5" by 3.5", with circular volvelle inside measuring approx. 3" in diameter.
