New York, New York, 1857. Good. Toned with some soiling, worn, small tear with minor loss to upper wrapper. Spine chipped with approx. one third missing at foot.. A very "merry" book of puzzles for Victorian children, originally appearing in the children's periodical Merry's Museum. Includes 382 puzzles with an answer key in the rear, and illustrations throughout. Most are riddles or word puzzles, but there are also many delightful rebuses. Cover illustration shows a boy and a girl on either side of a floral arbor, with children playing together in the distance with jacks, dolls, and marbles. Single vol. (7.25" by 5"), pp. 96, in original illus. wrps. No. 84: Why is green grass like a mouse? A: Because the cattle eat it, and the cat'll eat it.
