Founded in the midst of the depression, the SFTU organized sharecroppers, including many descendants of those formerly enslaved. One of very few integrated organizations in the south in the pre-Civil Rights era, the union fought against New Deal policies, most notably the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, which benefited landowners to the detriment of tenant farmers.
