By M. Adolphe Thiers
Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1865. Decorative Cloth. Very Good +. The 1865 1st American edition of this sweeping examination of the reign of Napoleon. Translated from its original French by D. Forbes Campbell and H.W. Herbert, and complete in 5 octavo volumes. All 5 volumes solid and VG in their dark-brown cloth, with decorative blindstamping to the panels and brilliant gilt-design along the spines (which, in each case, is a towering monument to Napoleopn himself in bright gilt). In fact the gilt-motif is so striking, so notably attractive that in all likelihood it's the most significant feature to this edition. Very light wear along several of the outer hinges, very mild wear --with just a touch of loss-- at several of the spine crowns (but in no way effecting the design). The period bookplates of the "Oshkosh Y.M.C.A. Library" at each front pastedown, from where the set was likely removed 100+ years ago, its path since then impossible to track until now. A lovely American spin by Lippincott of Philadelphia on the rule of the Emperor Napoleon.
