According to Starnes and Noyes, Kersey's revisions to this edition were so extensive that this work should be considered an entirely new dictionary. Moreover, this was a "universal dictionary, so intelligently planned and executed as to constitute a distinguished performance and a worthy forerunner of Johnson." (Starnes and Noyes.
