Galatin, Tennessee: Sumner Female Academy, 1852. Toned with chipping/wear. Significant edge wear.. Engraved diploma finished in contemporary ink, certifying that the student Annie E. Staley has completed the course of study offered by the Sumner Female Academy in Galatin, Tennessee, in 1852. It has been signed at the foot by the President, Preceptress, Professor of Music, and four of the Academy's trustees. Engraved on card measuring approx. 10" by 12.5", verso blank. Rev. and Mrs. Henry Hunt had a female academy in the 1830s in Gallatin, Sumner County, which taught both plain and ornamental needlework at no extra charge.
