Publisher's black topstain. Illustrated endpapers. Bottom fore-edge corner of the front board bumped. Several of the preliminary pages, including the title page are darkened, most likely from an article about Wendell Berry having been laid in. In the dust jacket, with a darkened spine and occasional light chipping to the edges. There is a 1/4" closed tear to the bottom edge, near the spine. Freedman A1. Wendell Berry's first work, a novel of the Kentucky tobacco country. The first in the 'Coulter Series'.

Signed by Wendell Berry, with the date "4/25/60," on the half title. This copy is from the personal library of Wallace Stegner. With a laid in note written by Lynn Stegner, Wallace Stegner's daughter in law, stating that this book is from Wallace Stegner's library.

Stegner was a prolific author of fiction and historical nonfiction set mainly in the American West. His influence on American writers is enormous. He was often referred to as the "Dean of Western Writers." He received a B.A. degree from the University of Utah in 1930.
