By Ben Ames Williams
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1944. Very Good/Very Good -. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1944. First Edition, First Printing. Illustrated dust jacket with $2.50 price and Wartime Book logo to dust jacket; boards in orange-red cloth stamped in black. 1944 date to title page, removed in later printings. Dust jacket chipped and creased with several tears along edges and two longer tears along bottom edge along spine and front fold with extensive amateur tape repair to verso, thankfully nearly invisible to exterior; a couple small abrasions to front panel. Boards rubbed along edges, with head of spine slightly crushed; mild general smudging to cloth. Binding sound and interior unmarked. Still a serviceable, Good to Very Good copy of Williams' psychological melodrama, basis for the 1945 film noir starring Gene Tierney.
