Paul Theroux and V.S. Naipaul were literary associates and friends for 30 years. The two met in 1965 when Theroux was teaching at Makerere University in Uganda. Theroux wrote a well-received biography of Naipaul a year before publishing his first novel. Despite their close friendship, their relationship became rocky and led Theroux to publish another biography, though of harsher tone, of Naipaul and his wife Pat in Sir Vidia's Shadow in 1998.
