A brief letter from Joseph Trumbull (1782–1861) — then a U. S. Congressman from Connecticut, later governor of that state — to an acquaintance in Washington, D. C., introducing Francis J. Clerc, who was about to travel both there and Richmond, VA, where he would be residing for the winter. Clerc was the son of Laurent Clerc, who was born deaf in France, emingrated to the United States in 1816, and founded the first permanent school for the deaf in Hartford with noted educator Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.
