Civil War Nurse Illustrated Cover

  • United States , 1860
By
United States, 1860. Very good. Toned with light spotting/dust soiling. Some discoloration from adhesive to underneath of the envelope tongue.. A scarce example of an unused illustrated Civil War-era cover (envelope) depicting a woman rummaging through her drawers and crying out, "I have no one to send--I'll go myself, and nurse the sick". The implication here is that the woman, who has no male child to send to support the war effort, will offer her own womanly skills as a nurse. A nice example of Civil War-era ephemera reinforcing gender roles, notions of patriotic duty, and women's work. Unused, measuring approx. 2.75" by 5
