Winter was commissioned to make a poster for the Munich summer games. The vibrant abstract design exemplified his lyrical style. These Olympic games are considered one of the most visually compelling and cohesive Olympic design campaigns of all time. Artists from all over the world were commissioned to create poster designs which were unified by adding a white banner at the bottom with the Olympic Rings, the logo of the Olympic games and the words "Olympische Spiele Muchen 1972".

Fritz Winter (1905 -1976 was a German painter of the postwar period best known for his abstract works in the Art Informel (lyrical abstraction) style. He studied Bauhaus at the Weimer school. Winter was soon counted among the so-called degenerate artists whose work the Nazi government banned and purged from German museums in 1937. In 1939, with the onset of World War II, the artist was drafted into the German army and sent to the Eastern front, fighting in Poland and Russia.
