Bright Pink Oblong 8vo Valentine with Pictorial Lace Paper, Victorian Scrap

London, 1850. Very good. The occasional spot, some minor damage on lower leaf verso from previous adhesive. A particularly bright and vibrant 8vo valentine, made from pictorial lace paper and small embossed pieces of Victorian scrap depicting flora in each corner. The lace paper depicts an elaborate natural scene in which three couples are courting: on the left, a musician serenade his intended with a lute; on the right, two lovers gaze into each other's eyes as they walk together; and in the center, a handsome couple on horseback walk through the forest. What makes this example notable is the bright pink color that has been printed (as evidenced by the ink squash) over the lace paper. While printing, registration would have been extremely difficult due to the fineness of the lace paper. Oblong bifolium (5" by 7"), inside blank.
