American businessman Robert Henry Winborne Welch, Jr. (1902-1977), made a fortune in the candy business, which he used in great part to sponsor his conservative political activism and anti-communist causes. In 1958, Welch, along with 10 other men, including American Army Colonel and former aide-de-camp to General Douglas MacArthur, Laurence Eliot Bunker, founded the influential John Birch Society. The right-wing organization rose in prominence, peaking in the 1970s, and became known for Welch’s anti-communist conspiracy theories, including his controversial allegation that Dwight D. Eisenhower was a communist agent.
