Cameo Cover for Sherwood, Hemmens & Co. Cigar Manufacturers - Tobacco Company Exploits Native American Female Hunter
- New York, New York: W. Eaves, 1871
New York, New York: W. Eaves, 1871. Very good. Light toning, right edge torn, pen trial arithmetic on verso.. A handsome 1870s cameo cover advertising Sherwood, Hemmens & Co., of Utica, New York, "Manufacturers & Dealers in All Kinds of Domestic & Foreign Cigars, Tobacco, Snuffs &c." Cameo covers were popular ways for businesses to promote themselves in the 1870s and 1880s, and consisted of envelopes for circulars that had an embossed and colored seal that resembles cameo jewelry. This example is nice because of its large size and detailed image. Its embossing is also so strong it is felt on both sides of the envelope or "cover". The image depicts a Native American woman with bow and arrow, stylized in the "Noble Savage" stereotype popular at the time to promote tobacco. Measures approx. 3.25" by 5", stamped and postmarked October 1st in Utica (no year), addressed in ink to Mr. E[?] Hawey of Camden, New York. Original circular missing. The stamp is a general issue 1870-1871 green 3 cent stamp depicting Washington in profile.
