By Gertrude Stein (subject)
New York: Acme News Pictures, 1935. Vintage press photograph of novelist, poet, and playwright Gertrude Stein preparing to return to Paris by ocean liner on May 4, 1935. Printed mimeo snipe affixed to the verso, along with the stamps of the "Philadelphia Inquirer" and its library.

Stein arrived in America in October of 1934 after a 30-year absence, promptly embarking on a six-month lecture tour of the country. The tour proved successful, earning her a great degree of literary prestige, and resulted in a publishing contract with Random House.

From the archive of the PIX Agency, an American photo house that acted as an intermediary between emigre photographers (as well as those still living in Europe) and the American magazine and newspaper market between 1935-1969.

6 x 8 inches, archivally matted in a 11 x 14 inch 8-ply mat. Very Good plus.
