By Wharton, Edith
1919. One leaf, recto and verso, on plain light blue stationery. Frame 18" wide x 13" high; double window on recto, single window on verso. About fine (small stains in bottom margin); framed with black-and-white photographic portrait of Wharton. One leaf, recto and verso, on plain light blue stationery. Frame 18" wide x 13" high; double window on recto, single window on verso. Wharton begins her letter to Mr. Adams by apologizing for the tardiness of her response: "The charming mistletoe bough & your good wishes overtook me first as I was stuggling through a particularly crowded Xmas & packing up to leave for the South, & I waited to thank you till I could do so peacefully & quietly, with enough miles between us & Paris to be fairly safe from interruption." She goes on to say how much she regretted answering "so inhospitably" to his offer to have a friend play for her, adding, "I should have enjoyed it so much, & should have liked to see you again before leaving too." Wharton closes by writing that she hoped to find them "both in Paris on my return," and that perhaps her friend "Mr. Fairchild has got back his piano & will let us give a concert on it."

Accompanied in the frame by a printed reproduction of a contemporaneous photograph of Wharton.
