[Photo collection]: 1970's California custom car paint jobs
- Hardcover
- [California] , 1974
[California], 1974. Hardcover. Near Fine. A collection of 143 color photographs, the majority measuring 3½" x 5", seven measuring 3½" x 3½", and one 8" x 10", housed in a white ring binder measuring 10¾" x 11½". Photos toned along the edges, a few with tiny edge bumps, a few photos with surface damage, very good or better overall, with old adhesive lines on the verso's from having been pasted into an album.
A photo album archiving the custom paint work of a California body shop, date stamped 1973-1974. In the background of several photos, a sign for Cliff's Auto Body can be seen. We have found evidence of a Cliff's Auto Body that was operating at the time in Hawthorne, California, southwestern Los Angeles County. Also to note is that all license plates seen in the photos are from California.
In the early 1970's, with the muscle car era coming to an end, panel vans swept through the custom car scene like a psychedelic wave, becoming the vehicle of choice for many people who wanted to express themselves through their ride. Arguably the best way to stand out was with a custom airbrush paint job. Many different paint styles can be seen throughout this album, including murals, smoke, panels, tape, flames, stenciling, and more. The photos feature about 45 different custom vans, along with five different trucks, several Corvettes, a Mustang, a Camaro, two Datsun 240Z's, a Honda Civic, a Beetle, several Porsches (911's, 356's, and a 914), and more. A few vehicles are depicted both before and after their paint jobs.
An excellent collection of photographs, offering a glimpse into the West Coast custom car scene of the 1970's. The high quality paint work seen throughout the album was performed during a time when body shops were seeing a huge jump in competition, and is very representative of the period.
