Americanism vs. Another ISM: The A.B.C. of Patriotism

By Ralph Richards
Kansas City, Missouri: Franklin Hudson Publishing Company, 1912. Very good. Light spotting, top edge chewed.. A scarce early conservative political pamphlet offering a strong rebuke of socialism and immigration, as well as a case for the idea of American Exceptionalism (the belief that the United States is unique and exceptional among world nations). Uses rhetoric, ideology, and arguments still in use by certain political campaigns and groups today. Explicitly defines socialism as "a short sighted utilitarian scheme which ignores God, would imbrue man, and forgets eternity", and contrasts it with free labor, which it defines as "the right and opportunity to produce and, by the grace of God, [gain] fair compensation for the performance". Note the pervasive xenophobic fear mongering throughout, especially in the chapter titled "The Chinese C****e and the Russian Serf Are Ready to Take Your Jobs" (p.17) and the chapter "White Slavery and Socialism" which argues that "undesirable foreigners" should be limited from "landing on our shores and competing unfairly with American working men" (p.20). An interesting pamphlet ripe with research opportunities and relevance to current political events. Second edition. Single vol. (7.5" by 3.75"), pp. 48, in original illus. wrps with image of American eagle on front. Approx. 6 copies on OCLC (July 2024).
