The North Carolina author's first book, a collection of short stories published when Betts was just twenty-two years old. The work garnered her immediate acclaim both local and critical--the rear jacket blurbs include praise from Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Pearl S. Buck, and the book was awarded the UNC Putnam Book Prize. Her most famous short story collection, "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (1973), was nominated for the National Book Award.
