West Hatfield, MA: Pennyroyal Press, 1989. Hardcover. Near Fine. Hardcover. Number 79 of 200 copies signed by Maclean and Moser on the colophon. A beautiful edition with author Maclean's first story in his book of three stories published in 1976. It is a celebration of the joys and challenges of fly fishing and much more. A movie with the same title was issued in 1992, staring Brad Pitt. In the July 1, 2024 issue of The New Yorker, Kathryn Schulz wrote a long article on the life and work of Maclean who was born in 1902 and died in 1990, the year after this edition was published. She writes: "If you know Maclean, it is likely because of his first work, “A River Runs Through It and Other Stories,” a triptych of tales—about, among other things, families, fly-fishing, love, death, and a time when virtually all hard work in this country was still done by hand—that was published to enormous acclaim and considerable astonishment when the author was seventy-three years old." This book includes 10 wood engravings by the incomparable Barry Moser. Most of the engravings are of various flies used in fly fishing. The name of each fly is given on the verso of the engraving's page.
