- Morristown, New Jersey: Mansion House, 1880
Morristown, New Jersey: Mansion House, 1880. Very good. Dust soiling, creasing.. A set of three (3) printed menus with extensive handwritten additions and corrections for the hotel Mansion House of Morristown, New Jersey, dating from the 1880s. Located on the bustling Washington Street, is served as both a luxury hotel for well-to-do tourists and a stylish meeting place for locals. Luxuries offered to those staying at the hotel included "hardwood floors, steam heat, gas-powered lighting and electrical bells, which were supplemented by multiple dining rooms, common areas and a two-story piazza" (morriscountyhistory.org). The present menus serve as the perfect emblem of such luxury: each features an extensive wine list and fine dishes ranging from mock turtle soup to lobster salad, spring lamb with mint sauce, and rice croquettes. Each is printed on colored paper; two have images of the hotel on the front, and the final features a stylized illustration of a horse and horseshoe. A guest has commented in black ink on one of the menus ("Splendid dinner"). Each is a printed bifolium measuring approx. 6.25" by 4.5
