Ivory Coast, 20th century. The Yaure masks from the Ivory Coast are well-known for their intricate craftsmanship and cultural symbolism. They feature smooth, oval faces with serene expressions, high foreheads, narrow eyes, and small mouths. These masks often include animal motifs and geometric patterns. They are used in traditional ceremonies such as funerals, initiation rites, and ancestor honors. It is believed that they possess spiritual power, ensuring protection, fertility, and prosperity for the community. The Yaure style combines realism and stylization, harmonizing human and animal elements.
