Essay collection by Haitian poet and activist René Depestre (b. 1926). The work opens with a piece calling for a new identity for post-colonial Haiti and goes on to discuss the responsibilities of the modern Caribbean writer. A late essay is simply titled "Un Orphée des Caraïbes: Aimé Césaire.
