Small, thick octavo (17.5cm.); original unadorned parchment; [12],715,[53]pp. (collated, presume complete); engraved title page, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces throughout. Parchment rather soiled and worn at margins with biopredation and small losses to rear cover, spine darkened, three contemporary and slightly later ownership inscriptions to front pastedown, free endpaper, and title page, else a Very Good, internally clean copy. The first volume only, bound without the subsequent two shorter volumes as found in the Lyon copy.
Rare French language edition of the Jesuit theologian Francisco de Ribera's hagiography of Carmelite nun and mystic Terese of Ávila (1515-1582) to whom Ribera acted as confessor. This edition with the lovely title page printed within an architectural engraved frame depicting Saints Mary and Joseph and the infant Jesus, two angels above them displaying the symbol of the Society of Jesus.
