Early Victorian Children's Block Puzzle Depicting Exotic Adventure Scenes

France: N.p., 1850. Fair. Box damaged with one apron partially lacking. Dust soiling with toning, water stains.. A handsome early Victorian block puzzle, depicting six (6) different dramatic adventure scenes for young children to marvel at. This example is complete with all thirty (30) blocks, the original box with sliding lid, and six (6) prints depicting each of the finished puzzles (the final print is pasted to the top of the box lid). The scenes include: a great snake battling a lion in an exotic landscape; Napoleon III on his war horse; wild horses and swans against a tropical landscape with ruins; a meeting of two exoticized nomadic tribes; and two pastoral scenes depicting cattle and a shepherd against mountainous landscapes. Only one has been signed ("G Roux del"). A former owner has cut the letter "E" out of the decorated paper on the side and bottom of the box, perhaps in an attempt to prevent siblings from pilfering the puzzle. Each print measures approx. 7.5" by 6.25" and is a hand-colored lithograph. Each block measures approx. 1" by 1" by 1", and assemble to make a completed puzzle measuring approx. 7.5" by 6" by 1".
