Alexandria, VA, 1880. St. John's Academy was established on September 8, 1833 in Alexandria, Virginia by brothers William and Richard L. Carne, along with Reverend John Smith, S.J. and other Jesuits. In the 1850s, a primary school was added to the Academy; enrollment fluctuated but reached 154 in the 1863–64 school year. The Latin motto visible on the seal states ‘Pro deo et pro patria’, or ‘For God and Country’. ~ ~This re-enrollment from address fathers of current students whether they will be returning in the following year. It is signed by Richard L. Carne, A.M., the Principal and son of one of the founders of the school and dated “188_”. Around the time of this form being sent to student’s homes, St. John's moved to the corner of Duke & South Columbus Street. In late 1895, St. John’s closed; it had over 1500 alumni.
