The front free endpaper has the partial remains of a previous owner's bookplate. In the dust jacket, designed by Rosemary Grimble, with a loss from the paper at the foot of the spine and the surrounding area of the rear panel, and a few lesser tears to the extremities. Huxley's account of her childhood in Africa, amongst the Kikuyu, during the years just before the First World War.

From the personal collection of Nelson Algren with his signature and his trademark drawing of a cat in yellow and black on the front free endpaper. Algren grew up in Chicago, a city that he would make famous through his portrayals of its poor, working, and criminal classes. His affinity for the marginalized sections of American society marked his entire career. Algren won the 1950 National Book Award for The Man With the Golden Arm.
