A record of American photographer Robert Vavra's journey to Kenya.

Vavra set up his tent at Ololasurai in the highlands of southwestern Kenya, where few white men have been spotted. He was accompanied by Sekerot Ole Mpetti, an English-speaking Maasai who became both friend and interpreter. While there, he became acquainted with the Maasai as they came by his tent to exchange stories and experiences. This book is his vibrant portrait of a vanishing way of life, a moving account of coming to know a people, not as cold anthropological types, but as friends.

Vavra is particularly known for his equine photography. He is the author of 40 books which have been translated into 8 languages. He divides his time between Seville, Spain, the Kenyan Highlands, and El Cajon, California.

Warmly inscribed by Robert Vavra on a sheet of his letterhead mounted to the verso of the front free endpaper: "For____ 'Leader of the / Enchanted Safari'- / I hope that this book / will bring back some memories / of the Kenya that I am sure / you knew so well and loved / so much. / With the best of wishes, / Robert Vavra / 1991.
