The first book edition of this work, previously commissioned and distributed by the American Oil Company, noting "places in America where Blacks made history", clearly created with the best of intentions, but also clearly written during a time when the term 'making history' was still being defined for people of color, rather than by them. The preface was penned by Senator Edward W. Brooke.
